Sarah Chen

Lead Product Designer · Mentor Founder

10+ years in UX at Figma, Notion, Loom
Led design for products used by 2M+ people
Speaker: Config 2024, UX London, Awwwards
Taught 4,200+ designers since 2021

I switched into UX design after four years in marketing. I remember the overwhelm — free YouTube tutorials, $2,000 bootcamps, courses that were really just recorded slides with no feedback and no community. Nothing was designed to actually get you hired.

After landing at Figma and then building a design team at a Series B startup, I started Mentor because I knew I could do it differently. Every module is built around a project brief — because portfolio pieces are how you get hired, not certificates.

I review every student's final project personally. I will tell you honestly what's working and what isn't — the way a good manager would. My goal is simple: get you into a design role faster than any other path would.

Student stories

Real results from real career changers

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"I was a project manager with zero design background. After Mentor, I built a 3-case-study portfolio that landed me 6 interviews. I started as a junior UX designer at a fintech company 11 weeks after finishing the course. Sarah's personal review of my capstone project was a turning point."

MR

Marcus Reid

Ex–PM → Junior UX Designer at Clearco

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"I'd tried two other courses before Mentor and bounced off both — they were theoretical and the feedback was generic. Here, every module felt intentional. The usability-testing module alone taught me more than a semester of a design degree. I shipped my portfolio, got 3 offers, and chose the one with the best team."

AP

Ayesha Patel

Graphic designer → Product Designer at Lattice

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"The design systems module was worth the price of the whole course. I went from copying random UI off Dribbble to understanding *why* things look the way they do. I'm now a mid-level designer at a SaaS startup, and I use what I learned in Mentor every single day. The 30-day guarantee gave me the push to just buy it."

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need any prior design experience?
No. Mentor is built for absolute beginners. The only prerequisite is a laptop (Mac or Windows) and a free Figma account. We start from scratch in week one and build steadily. Many students have never opened a design tool before enrolling.
How much time do I need per week?
Plan for roughly 5–7 hours per week: 2–3 hours of video lessons and 3–4 hours on the project brief. Most students complete the course in 8–10 weeks. Self-paced students have taken up to 6 months — there's no deadline with lifetime access.
What tools will I be using?
Figma is the primary tool (free plan is sufficient for the entire course). We also cover Maze for usability testing, FigJam for workshops, and Notion for documentation. No paid subscriptions are required to complete the course.
What's the difference between Self-paced and Mentored?
Both include the full course content. Mentored adds a personal review of your final portfolio by Sarah, weekly live Q&A calls, a cohort of 4 peers for structured feedback exchanges, and a resume/LinkedIn review. If getting hired faster matters more than saving $150, choose Mentored.
When does the next cohort start?
The next Mentored cohort starts July 14. Cohorts are capped at 20 students so feedback stays personal. Self-paced enrollment is open year-round and you can start the same day you purchase.
How does the money-back guarantee work?
Complete at least two modules and submit the associated project briefs. If after doing the actual work you feel it's not the right fit, email hello@learnwithmentor.com within 30 days of purchase and we'll refund you in full. We ask for the project submissions so we know you genuinely tried — not to make the process hard.
Will this help me even if I already have some design experience?
Yes — especially if your experience is in graphic or visual design rather than product design. Many students come from illustration, marketing, or frontend development and find the UX research and systems modules fill the biggest gaps in their portfolios. If you're already a working product designer looking to go senior, our advanced course (coming Q4 2025) will be a better fit.
